The Team
The Routing and Optical Software Group within the Core Software Group, has the charter for all Software Development functions across all Service Provider Routing and Optical platforms. The Cisco Network Convergence System 4000 (NCS 4000) Series is a converged optical service platform providing dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM), Optical Transport Network (OTN), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Carrier Ethernet, and label switch router (LSR) or IP multiservice capabilities. It delivers massive scale through a state-of-the-art silicon and system design, while offering dramatic network efficiency and simplification led by innovations in usability, automation, service management, turn-up, and monitoring.
As a part of the engineering team, you will be responsible for the whole product cycle of NCS4k releases, starting from close interaction with Marketing and Account teams, understand the features and priorities, work with BU-wide technical community on the architecture and design, take the product and feature through development and integration and collaborate with test team through Feature and System test cycles. Role & Responsibilities

*Responsible for the design, development, and implementation.
*Translate Department goals into own work assignments, independently determine approaches to solutions
*Interface cross-functionally and geographically at a working team level with engineering teams, by demonstrating unambiguous team interaction.
*Mentor junior engineers in the domain.

Required Qualifications

- Focus on system software development for routing/switching products
- Master software architecture, maintain/enhance quality of existing code base and implement new features in areas like nonstop forwarding, stateful switchover, supervisor card, line card and chassis management, in service software upgrade, pluggable optics etc.
- Develop firmware and drivers for various chassis based and fixed configuration routers.
- Participate in design and code reviews in a team spread across geographical boundaries
- Debug, root cause and resolve complex system issues
- Work very closely with hardware team for reviewing specifications, bringing up new hardware, debugging hardware/software interaction issues and implementing any workarounds that might be required
- Will apply knowledge of L2/L3 protocols to understand newer protocols/features.
- Design and develop new software product features.
- Contribute innovative ideas for multiple module architecture. Define product internal/external interfaces.
- Develop complex, multiple modules of code independently.
- Write complete functional and design specs independently.
- Lead development of subsystems.
- Solves complex problems at the system level.

Specific Skill Required
- Experience in platform/system bring-up with Linux/QNX kernel on Intel/Freescale based CPU architecture
- Low level understanding of Kernel and 32bit/64bit architecture
- Thorough knowledge on distributed system architecture and experience in developing High Availability solution on a distributed system.
- Knowledge on ISSU - In Service Software Upgrade
- Experience in developing device drivers and integrating third party SDKs

Typically requires BSEE/CS or MS/CS or equivalent with 6 to 10 years relevant experience in internetworking technologies and applications.
